THIRTY

“What if we’re sleeping and the police come?” I ask, struggling to hold the bucket of chopped wood.

“We’ll hear the car,” Josh replies, the axe in one hand, three logs under the other arm. He looks like a real lumberjack, but I don’t tell him. He’s already a big show-off.

I set the bucket down by the shed, exhausted, shoulders aching, and then we go into the house.

“Yeah, but they could come for us on foot,” I continue, “and surround the place with a swat team?”

“A swat team?”

“Well, why not? We’re wanted criminals. Isn’t that what happens?”

“It depends on the criminal, I suppose. But unless they suspect that we might be armed, I doubt they’d bring a swat team.”

I dead-bolt the front door. “Even so, if they do find us, that door isn’t going to hold them off for long. Plus, we have to think about the backdoor, too.”

“Okay then, what do you suggest we do about it?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Reinforce the doors?”

“With what?”

“I’m not sure. You’re the expert.”

Josh laughs. “Expert on what? Zombie invasions?”

“I’m positive we can find something in the shed to strengthen the doors.”

Josh taps on the living-room window. “What about this? They could smash the glass.”

“They’re double-glazed.”

“That won’t matter if they’ve got a battering ram.”

“Shit.” I think for a second. “Couldn’t we board them up?”

“If we do that, we’ll be living in darkness. Do you really want that? I know I don’t. Sounds like a shitty life.”

“I have an idea,” I say, and usher him upstairs to the spare room. “How about we dismantle this bunkbed and use the metal pieces as window bars?”

Josh inspects the frame. “It’s not a bad idea.” He grins and sits on the bed. “Now, who’s the zombie expert?”

“Bars on the windows are only going to slow them down. What are we going to do once they get inside?”

“We need an escape route.”

I open the window, peer down at the ground, and try to gauge the height. It’s about ten metres. “It’s too high to jump.”

Josh pokes his head out. “There’s rope in the shed. I could fix a bracket to the wall, tie the rope to it, and we could climb down. Make a run for the woods.”

“That’s a great idea!” I beam, then glance down at the drop again. “Shame we couldn’t have one of those inflatable slides. You know, the ones they have on planes.”

“Yeah. That would be good. It would almost be worth getting raided.”

I laugh. “Definitely.”
